Poponi House is an elegant beach estate built by Hon. Edward Brabazon Meade in the early 1940’s. Meade was the son of the 4th Earl of Clanwilliam, admiral of the British fleet and advisor to Queen Victoria. The Meade family were direct descendants of William the Conqueror.
Poponi is a four-acre beachfront estate located on the beach that was named after it, the mile-long, pink-sand Poponi Beach. Poponi was picked by Caribbean Travel & Life as one of the 20 best beaches in the Caribbean. The house is 50 paces from the beach, set among beautiful grounds landscaped with palms and flowering trees. There is great snorkeling off of our beach! Two beachfront restaurant/bars are walking distance down the beach: Unique Village, 10 minutes, and La Bougainvillea 15 minutes.
Poponi House offers expansive views of the Atlantic from both bedrooms, which are located at the front of the house. The master bedroom, with en-suite bathroom and king-size bed, has French doors that open onto a porch with ocean breezes. The second bedroom has the same incredible views and access to the screened porch that runs along the south side of the house. The second bedroom has twin beds that can be converted into a comfortable king size bed. The bath for this bedroom is located right across the hall from it. There is also an outdoor shower at Poponi for guests who prefer showering “en plein air” in such a private setting.
Poponi has two living areas - the first has a beautiful wooden tray ceiling with fans and comfortable furniture. The cable TV, DVD, video library, chromecast etc. are located in this room. It has doors leading to the screened porch. The second living area offers ocean views and breezes, beautiful natural lighting, comfortable seating, and doors out onto the screened porch. There is also a dining table for six.
The kitchen is fully equipped with new stainless steel gas range, refrigerator, dishwasher, abd microwave, and gas views of the great banyan tree in the backyard. It has a door leading out to the bougainvillea-covered trellis with dining table beneath and small courtyard with a gas grill. The screened porch on the south side of Poponi offers spectacular views and peaceful breezes of the Atlantic. There is a furnished cabana down by the beach which provides shade and privacy.
Poponi has many amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Amenities include back-up generator, air conditioning in one living room and both bedrooms (the guest bedroom has a portable AC unit that can be used when needed), WiFi, TV, cable, DVD, stereo system, board games, safe, beach chairs and hammocks by the beach and under the Banyan tree.
For larger groups, there is a studio cottage a short walk from the house which can be included for an extra charge.
Poponi house is centrally located near the settlement of North Palmetto Point which has several grocery shops, pharmacy and restaurants. The historic town of Governor's Harbour, the main town on the island, is a ten minute drive from the property. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, banks with ATM’s, gift shops, liquor stores, dive shop, bakery, and half a dozen excellent restaurants. One or another of the restaurants/bars will have live music almost every night of the week. You can also buy the fresh catch of the day to grill at home from the town dock.

We’re so glad you enjoyed Poponi House. I’m very sorry the dishwasher broke while you were there. We have replaced it, and fixed the leaky toilet. The internet equipment is up to date and works perfectly. Occasionally the internet goes down on the island for an hour or two. This is not a problem with our equipment. In addition, there are times when the bandwidth on the island is not sufficient for streaming video, particularly in the evenings, when everyone on the island is at home trying to stream. But the WIFI on the island works fine for everything else.

The house was big and roomy inside and out. Loved the screened in porch especially at dusk when the mosquitoes and sand flies would come out. The property was well manicured and maintained with beautiful landscaping with lots of trees and flowers. Checking into the house was easy. The owner of the property lives just across the hedges so he was always around if you needed anything but wasn’t hanging around the property bothering you. However I wasn’t sure what to do when I checked out. There was no directions on that. The only problem I had with the house was that there was no washer and dryer. That was my fault for not checking on the amenities of the house. I just assumed that with a house like this that caters to families, there would be a washer and dryer. On the whole, we loved the house. It was as if we had our own private beach. It was in da heart of town so everything was close by. There was a restaurant on your left and on your right of the house. Both walking distance via beach. You had the privacy of the house but you also felt save in isolation.

The Poponi House certainly has its charm! Decorated in quaint, bohemian style, just steps to a beautiful beach. We liked these things about it.
Beware....the mosquitoes are a HUGE nuisance...inside and out! Thought the house should provide more essentials,,,,like water( they provide 1 large bottle which lasts just 2 days at most), toilet paper, more towels, coffee filters that fit the coffee pot provided.

Christy, we’re glad you enjoyed your stay at Poponi! Mostly. I would, however, like to address some of your comments in the review, to avoid confusion for future guests that may read it. While I can’t, I certainly sometimes wish I could control nature. Mosquitoes ARE a HUGE nuisance. Especially when it’s calm and we have had a lot rain. Nature again! Keeping the windows shut (which you did) and taking steps to minimize their effect, with repellent, are about all you can do. Please understand that the problem is not exclusive to Poponi, but it is a tropical island. We provide “essentials” to get guests started on their stay. 2 rolls of TP per bath, a roll of paper towels in the kitchen, 5 gallons of drinking water, as well as spices, cooking oil, and ice, dish soap, dish washer detergent, etc. etc. These renewable items are available on the island and, like groceries, are up to the guests to take care of once the initial items are gone. As far as towels go, we put 4 bath and 2 hand size towels in each bathroom, for a total of 10, as well as 4 beach towels. This usually is sufficient. Had you needed more, a simple request would have taken care of it. I am careful to ask, every few days, if everything is ok. This was never mentioned. We strive to provide the best experience we can to our guests, from the initial impression (cleanliness, and comfortable, tasteful, decor), to an unparalleled location, grounds, and historical setting.

Poponi House has a lot of charm. It was more than spacious enough for a family of four. We loved the location and the proximity to grocery stores as well as a few restaurants. Poponi House provides the quintessential setting for a true Bahamanian get-away. It provides everything you need to be comfortable while still allowing you to truly disconnect from your daily life (if you want - there is internet/tv if you don't). The property is an oasis on a stunning empty beach. The photos do not do it justice. Both bedrooms are large and comfortable and face the ocean so all guests fall asleep to the sound of the waves. There is an enormous L-shaped screen porch with multiple daybeds and tables for mosquito-free lounging day or night. Don't expect anything overly fancy, this is the Bahamas, and this house was built in the 1940s but well maintained, very clean, and extremely comfortable to live in. The tiki hut on the beach is only steps from the house but provides an additional oasis...all on your own property. Even though you feel secluded from the rest of the world, you are less than 10 minutes from countless other beaches, restaurants, stores, etc. Great central location on the island overall. Needless to say, we will be returning asap! Amazing owner and property manager...make sure to say hi!!!!

Not only was our trip AMAZING, the Poponi House and Beach was the icing on the cake! All the amenities were there to make our stay comfortable. Beautiful cottage style home, large areas to walk around and the small touches around the property (hammocks, etc) were perfect. We had 6 people in our party so we also rented the guest house above the garage. There was more than enough space for all of us. Only a few things to note, a large coffee maker would be nice (we had to bring the one down from the guest cottage to have 2 small ones to accomadate 6 ppl) and we would loved to have enjoyed the palapa down by the beach more, but with the large hedges right in front, it blocks the view of the beautiful ocean. The beach was very private and walking distance in either way to a restaurants/bar. Loved that we could snorkel directly off our beach. Waking up to the sunrises were incredible even from our bed. The property is large and well equipped, specially the kitchen (that for me is important), There are ample spaces outside in the garden and a very useful screened porch (keep the no-see-hum away).
Beautiful beach a few steps from the house. A very minor comment is that at the corner with the property there is the public beach access, so the beach is not always for yourself, but it's nice to see groups of young locals having fun at the beach.
The caretaker was available and helped us with some small issues due to heavy rain.
I would highly recommend this property.

We are currently building a home in North Palmetto Point and stay at various rentals when we travel to Eleuthera to check on our building progress. Without hesitation I'd say this was our VERY BEST experience. We loved the location, beach, grounds and the overall charm this property exuded! The courtyard directly off the kitchen/dining room area was our favorite location. It was surrounded by beautiful tropical plants and the pergola looming overhead was blanketed with gorgeous bougainvillea. The hummingbirds and warblers were abundant. The bedrooms were located on the ocean side which allowed for a very restful and dreamy sleep! This quaint cottage-like home was appointed nicely and allowed quest numerous locations for privacy, i.e., two living rooms, two dining area, huge screened in porch. Although a bit dated, the kitchen was very clean and functional - everything was in good working order! The beach is one of the best in Eleuthera and especially directly in front of the property. There is a nice amount of shade due to the very mature trees so if you needed to escape the sun it was easy to do. The walk to the beach was extremely easy as the lot provides a gradual slope that was very easy to navigate. There were no steep steps to climb in order to reach the property from the beach -- seemed like the PERFECT location! We LOVED our stay and are anxious to re-book! The only negative that we could think of was the condition of the bedroom pillows -- I think it is time to invest in some new pillows that feel and smell good! Jim King and Peter Jorgenson
